Our Pastor is Dr. John E. Hughes, a native of South Carolina, who has served the Lord in churches in South Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana and Missouri. He is known for his warm loving pastoral manner, biblical preaching, worship and organizational leadership and a keen sense of humor along with a welcoming spirit to all.

He graduated from Furman University, in Greenville, with a B.A. Cum Laude and from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary M. Div. and Ph.D. He is complemented in his service by his wife Carole Giles Hughes, a graduate of Winthrop University, B.A., The University of Louisville, M. Ed. and of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, M. Div. and D. Min. They have two married children and five grandchildren.

He became Pastor at First Christian in the fall of 2010, serving first as Transitional Minister, before being called as Pastor. He has led the church along with a Transformation Team and General Board to recover a future looking vision, to add the present staff members, to strengthen the Elder and Deacon Ministry, and the Educational Ministry, and to redecorate the sanctuary which was built in 1975.

Diana Myers is the Associate Music Director and Harpist for our Sunday worship.  Diana graduated from the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music with a Bachelors of Music , Harp and Education.  She has been a member of First Christian Church for 25 years and has served as our Associate Music Director since the 1990’s directing the youth orchestra, our annual children and youth Christmas play and the children’s choir at First Christian.  Diana has been a music teacher for over 35 years and is currently themusic teacher at the O’Quinn Schools of Porter Gaud in Charleston.               


Chelsea McCreight has taken care of our little ones during worship service since 2010 as our nursery attendant. Chelsea grew up at First Christian Church and participated in the nursery program herself at the age of three.  She recently graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Elementary Education and is a Teaching Fellows recipient.  Chelsea is now teaching 4th grade at North Charleston Elementary in addition to her Sunday morning responsibilities.
